Legend has it that that the Pekingese was the result of the crossing of a marmoset and a lion and has had the heart of a lion ever since. This popular little dog was the favorite of Chinese royalty and the Emperors' favorite dogs were held in high esteem. The theft of one was punishable by death, and visitors were expected to pay homage to the Emperors' favorites who were viewed as people.
