The Story of Fred the Unicorn

The Story of Fred the Unicorn
by Becca

Fred in the Forest

There was a unicorn named Fred,
Who lived in the forest deep .

 Fred runs from hounds

Poor Fred never got any rest,
And he could never sleep.
For the hunters came with arrows,

Fred's Hunters

And hounds both brave and strong.
They hunted Fred the unicorn
From dusk to early dawn.

 Maidens fair

Maidens fair and virtuous
Would wait for Fred for hours,
Writing songs and poetry
And weaving wreaths of flowers.

For unicorns are magic beasts,
They have a magic horn.
Part goat, part horse, part lion,
They always greet the morn.

And if you catch a unicorn
Three wishes his horn can give you.
But you must have a deadly aim
Or a heart both fair and true.

Fred meets his end

One day the hunters cornered Fred,
An arrow pierced his heart.
The hounds rushed forward eagerly
To tear poor Fred apart.

 A Gift for the King

They tied his body on a horse,
And took him far away.
For he was meant to please the King
On this, the Feasting Day.

 Feast Day

The festival lasted many days
And far into the nights.
Of all the sights there were to see,
Fred was the saddest sight.

Feast Day

But unicorns are magic beasts,
They have a magic horn.
Part horse, part goat, part lion,
They always greet the morn.

 Fred and Roses

So when the feasting's end grew near,
And smiles had all grown dim,
A wall of roses had appeared,
To hide the sight of him.

The men cried out in warning,
The maids cried out in fear.
Yet beside the roses stood a maid
Who had shed a single tear.

 The Awakening

Then the unicorn raised his muddy head
And his horn began to glow,
He blinked his dark eyes painfully,
And whimpered very low.

 Maiden Tears

Now his sad eyes had focused,
He saw the tearful maid,
She had watched him faithfully
While in silent death he lay.

Ancient song

The words she sang were very old,
Words that outlived time.

Deer

She shed a tear and saved his life
With a simple lilting rhyme...

Horses

Oh, unicorns are magic beasts,
They have a magic horn.

Fred Happy

Part goat, part horse, part lion,
Please rise and greet the morn. - The End
