William Aardvark and the Frog
by Becca

William Aardvark was a very unusual kind of aardvark. Granted, he did do normal aardvark things, like eating ants and bugs, rolling in the grass, and well...just being an aardvark. But he was not satisfied with being a plain old ordinary aardvark. William wanted everyone to notice him. William wanted to be extraordinary.

William grew his hair long, and started wearing sunglasses and a big gold necklace. He stopped eating ants and bugs and started eating leaves and grass. He even made a jet-powered skateboard. He zoomed all over the woods, plains and deserts seeking recognition. But nobody paid any attention to him.

One day, in desparation, William went to an astrologer to have his fortune told. He asked her "Can you tell me if I will ever be noticed?" The astrologer, who happened to be a frog, just smiled. "Will anyone ever see me as anything other than just an ordinary aardvark?" asked William in a weary voice.

The frog worked silently on her charts while William fidgeted and drummed his fingers on the table. The astrologer finally replied "Today you will meet a very special person who will see you as the most extraordinary aardvark in the world."

William was elated. He thanked the astrologer for her good news and raced off looking for the special person who would notice him.

William searched all day and evening long and saw no-one who matched the description. None of the other creatures seemed to pay the least bit of attention to him. Discouraged, he finally went home.

He sadly shut off his jet-powered skateboard. Then he heard a small sound behind him. There on the back of the jet-powered skateboard was the astrologer frog, smiling shyly.

"I have been lonely, too" said the frog, "and I think you are quite extraordinary!"

William was astonished and replied "And you are the most extraordinary frog I have ever met!"

From that day on they became friends. They hunted for bugs and ants. William rolled in the grass, while the frog splashed in the special pond William made just for her.

William combed his hair and put away his sunglasses and big gold necklace, for he had found a friend who loved him and thought he was much more than ordinary. And he loved and admired the frog very much, too.

Still, from time to time, William and the frog can be seen racing through the countryside on the jet-powered skateboard. No-one ever really pays attention, but to William and the frog it really doesn't matter.
